Popularly known as Kokedara or "Moss Temple", this site in western Kyoto originated in 729 and was restored and reconstructed by a Zen priest (and sensational gardener) Muso Kokushi in 1338. There is a beautiful wooden temple and a moss-covered rock garden that is simply extraordinary. We were very fortunate to visit as the site is closed to the public. Our access was granted as a special favour to Mr Moriyama. All the guests were invited into the temple and asked to caligraphy a personal wish onto small wooden tablets to be left behind in the temple. Very special.
